Personal injury protection (PIP)
Who’s Covered Under Florida PIP Insurance?
Personal injury protection insurance covers you and the following people, unless that person owns their own vehicle:
- Relatives living with you.
- Passengers in your vehicle.
- Pedestrians you hit.
- Anyone driving your car with your permission.
PIP insurance may also cover you, and family members living with you, when:
- Driving someone else’s car with permission.
- Riding in someone else’s car.
- Injured in a car accident as a pedestrian.
PIP 14-Day Rule
If you are involved in an accident, you must receive initial care and treatment from a qualified physician within 14 days of the accident. Failure to receive medical treatment within 14 days will result in a forfeiture of PIP coverage.
Compliance with Policy Conditions
In Florida personal injury cases, insurance companies may request an Examination Under Oath (EUO), which is a formal questioning of the insured party conducted under oath and recorded. This is in investigation tool utilized by many insurance carriers to verify information about the accident and determine coverage. Failure to attend a properly scheduled Examination Under Oath will result in a denial of PIP coverage under your policy. Therefore, it is imperative that you attend any properly scheduled Examination Under Oath.
